20 May 2024 – The starting point
The eIDAS 2.0 Regulation enters into force. Europe is doing more than updating the rules on digital identity: it is introducing the EUDI Wallet, the wallet that every European citizen will be able to keep on their smartphone.
2025–2026 – From regulation to implementation
Through the Implementing Acts, the European Commission translates the Regulation into technical specifications: how to build a Wallet, how to certify it and how it interacts with Wallets from other countries. This is the stage at which the EUDI Wallet takes shape.
24 December 2026 – Wallets become available to citizens
Every Member State must make at least one free Public Wallet available that is interoperable with the EUDI framework. In Italy, this process is already under way with IT-Wallet.
24 December 2027 – A key to public and private services
Businesses operating in regulated sectors, in both the public and private sectors, will be required to accept the EUDI Wallet as a means of identification at the user’s request.
